Know about UPS and Inverter

UPS and Inverter

Most of us have heard and use the UPS and Inverters, and in our daily life we use them too but we dono what they actually function of the Inverter and UPS. UPS and Inverters functions the same but with a little variation among them. Inverters are used in UPS to convert Direct Current (DC) to Alternating Current (AC), where as the dc is supplied from battery within the UPS and AC is supplied to the load, here the load may be TV, Fan, Light, computer and so on.

Lets see How UPS and Inverters function:

UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) supplies power to computers and other appliance. Mostly UPS were used for Computer appliance. UPS supplies power from the battery through the inverter to the appliance, even when power fails the UPS supplies power to the load (computer). UPS battery backup time is of 10 to 20 minutes since the battery backup time depends on the load.

UPS is with an internal rechargeable battery which is charged from the power line and used to generate line power to the load when the power line fails. UPS contain an inverter, an electronic device capable of generating 110/220v AC from battery-level DC voltage.UPS-generated AC is usually a lot less sine-shaped and some devices care more about that then others since Power line AC voltage is a sine-wave. In general, computer user uses UPS to avoid data loss when power fails. Normally UPS switches to the batteries in 3 to 8 millisecond, when the power fails.

Inverters with battery plays the same role as UPS but switching time from power line to batteries ranges upto 500 milliseconds. Due to the delayed switching time period, Inverters are used in Household purpose and not suitable for Computers.

UPS and Inverters plays the major role of supplying the power to the household and computer, but the power supplying time of the both varies. When considering UPS say (850 VA) with a load 500 watts will supply power for 5 - 10 mins. But for Inverter with the same configuration, it will supply power upto 3 - 4 hours.

Are you planning to buy Inverter / UPS, then some of the thing you must have in mind before buying it are load, purpose, type of device (UPS/Inverter), and backup time.

For Desktop computers with backup of 20 minutes, you can buy an UPS of 650 VA, 850 VA or higher.

For Household purpose with load of 150 Watts which means (3 fan and 3 tube lights), you can buy an Inverter of 650 VA or 850 VA (backup time varies depends on the addition of the batteries).

Hope this little information may be useful to you.
