London 2012 Olympic - India's First Medal

Ace rifleman Gagan Narang put India into the medal bracket by shooting a bronze in his pet 10 meter air rifle event even as his illustrious compatriot and defending champion Abhinav Bindra misfired at the London Olympics here Monday (30/07/2012).

Narang, 29, participating in his third Games, had a total score of 701.1 (598 qualifying, 103.1 final) to finish third at the Royal Artillery Barracks range, triggering celebrations among the Indian diaspora here and the countrymen back home.

Narang, who missed the final round in Beijing Games on a countback, was in his elements. In the final round, he had a series of 10.7, 9.7, 10.6, 10.7, 10.4, 10.6, 9.9, 9.5, 10.3 and 10.7 to bring India's first medal give India its first medal from the London Games.

The gold went to Romanian Alin George Moldoveanu with a total score of 702.1 (599 qualifying, 103.1 final) and Italian Niccolo Campriani bagged the silver with 701.5 (599 qualifying, 102.5 final).

In the qualifying round, Narang shot perfect series of 100 in all the rounds except the third when he scored 98. He also shot 53 inner 10s.

Narang's success has added to India's less than impressive medal count - which now stands at 21 comprising nine golds, four silvers and eight bronzes - in Olympics history.

Olympic gold medals are specially designed for each Game. The medals at the London 2012 Olympic Games will be awarded during a total of 302 Victory Ceremonies, taking places at venues across the UK.

The London 2012 Organizing Committee (LOCOG) Victory Ceremonies team worked closely with the British Museum’s Keeper of Coins and Medals, Philip Attwood, to look at the symbolic history of medals in Europe in the last century.

An independent panel of Sir John Sorrel (chair), Sir Mark Jones, Catherine Johnson, Ade Adepitan (deputy chair), Iwona Blazwick OBE, Niccy Hallifax and Martin Green was set up to look at the designs submitted by over 100 artists. The LOCOG Athletes’ Committee, chaired by Jonathan Edwards, and the British Olympic Association (BOA) were also involved throughout the process.

The medals can be seen at the British Museum throughout the Games.
The medals have been designed by David Watkins, and are in production at the Royal Mint headquarters in Llantrisant, South Wales.

The precious ore for the medals has been supplied by London 2012 sponsor Rio Tinto and was mined at Kennecott Utah Copper Mine near Salt Lake City in America, as well as from the Oyu Tolgoi project in Mongolia. For the small amount of non-precious elements that make up the bronze medals, the zinc was sourced from a mine in Ausdralia as well as from recycled stock, while the tin originates from a mine in Cornwall.

The Olympic medals circular form is a metaphor for the world. The front of the medal always depicts the same imagery at the Summer Games – the Greek Goddess of Victory, Nike, stepping out of the depiction of the Parthenon to arrive in the Host City.

The design for the reverse features five symbolic elements:
  • The curved background implies a bowl similar to the design of an amphitheater.
  • The core emblem is an architectural expression, a metaphor for the modern city, and is deliberately jewel-like.
  • The grid suggests both a pulling together and a sense of outreach – an image of radiating energy that represents the athletes’ efforts.
  • The River Thames in the background is a symbol for London and also suggests a fluttering baroque ribbon, adding a sense of celebration.
  • The square is the final balancing motif of the design, opposing the overall circularity of the design, emphasizing its focus on the center and reinforcing the sense of ‘place’ as in a map inset.

Indian Art in London Olympic Billboard

Indian Art in London Olympic Billboard

Sarnath, along with five other international artists, was commissioned to create site-specific works for the Olympic Host Boroughs in East London: Barking and Dagenham, Greenwich, Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets and WalthamForest. This project was commissioned by the London 2012 Festival and CREATE, and curated by Sarah McCrory of the Frieze Foundation.

Sarnath’s work “Gallery of losers (non-performers, almost-winners, under-achievers, almost-made-its)” consisting of 48 billboards, posters in local newspapers, and hoardings in East London, narrates the shared history of competitive sport from a different prospective. Going against the grain of most other Olympics-related advertising which solely emphasized winners, the artist decided to focus attention on the losers, the people who almost made it but didn’t quite succeed.

Sarah McCrory a couple of years ago saw my work for the first time at Frame, Frieze, and she liked it. She thought my work using text and image had a narrative possibility which may have affected a large community and was suitable for a public art project. Also my connection with East London made me a potential candidate. She asked me to present an idea for the Olympics and I proposed a “gallery of losers”, Barwa Khiladi (12th man) who is always ready but the opportunity never comes. It got accepted.

Your project for the London Olympics focuses on a “cottage emporium of losers”. Is the loser an overlooked source of artistic inspiration?

I don’t know about artistic inspiration but it certainly humanises people, particularly the Olympics, which has an inhuman aspect to it. A whole lot of dignity is required to be a loser, none is required when you win. I sometimes find winners vulgar. In this project I want to ruffle up the clichés about winnings. To me, winning is a small detail, but that could be because I have always been crap at competitive sports. The entire society is totted up to win from infancy till death. This can lead to indigestion. Just look at what it has made us into, a quick look at my self-congratulatory Facebook wall will tell you. It is a culture of legitimised bragging.

India has long been considered a country of losers at the Olympics. Were we the inspiration for your panels?

No. We have always been a nation that had a great empowering sense of humour. That was what saved us when we stood in the long immigration queues along with fellow third-worlders, waiting for all our orifices to be checked. The new entitled middle class has somewhat lost this ability in its mad pursuit to become first world. All around, you have this bone chilling sobriety and the fear of hurting sentiments. [The] recent banning of cartoons is symptomatic of this class.

Could you tell us a little more about some of the panels?

I have a boxer who is forever thinking of dodging punches. A pole-vaulter who, just before a jump, realises that perhaps he has chosen the wrong sport. A judoka who learned the sport through a correspondence course, a high jumper who only eats light food, has light thoughts and reads light literature, because high jump is all about levity.

Among others, I also have a race-walker whose mind moves steadily towards the finishing line but her legs don’t keep up, a ping pong player who is suddenly aware of the eerie silence of the indoor stadium and tries to remember how one spells “eerie”. Some stories are dark like a javelin thrower who accidentally hits a long jumper thus disqualifying himself and destroying the medal chances of the latter. A hockey player who faces a wall of bureaucrats sitting before the goal, basically all kinds of people who are psychologically hard-wired to lose.

We hear that you prepared for the project by actually training and dieting like an athlete. Did you learn anything particularly insightful during this mode of “method acting” so as to speak?

I wish I could tell you that I have a training regiment like Bollywood stars, who prepare for years before accepting a role. My preparation included getting in the skin of the loser, which frankly isn’t very difficult for me. Every week I would be a different sportsman but only psychologically. Except once I was thrown twelve times by judoka Douglas Vierra in his Sao Paolo dojo while trying to explain to me how judo is more about falling than throwing. Four weeks back I was a discus thrower, the week before that I was a fencer.

In the course of your research, did you perhaps alter the way you perceived losers? For instance, Andy Murray, recent loser at the Wimbledon, is equally a hero and a winner to many. In other words, one man’s loser could be another’s winner.

Loser is a loser, pure and simple. I would not try to dignify him by saying that “he too is some kind of winner”. The whole system of winning is something that we are questioning. I am not even interested in the classic idea of the underdog coming from behind and then surprising everyone. That’s too much in the realm of sports advertisement.

Lastly, people either love or hate the ArcelorMittal Orbit. Your thoughts?

It is as far from my work as Marylebone is from Hackney. It reminds me of an oversized Berlin kid who lets out ear-splitting howls in order to grab his parents’ attention. It is an example of “Big Man” art, big corporate giant in association with big celebrity artist, which will be opened by a Bollywood superstar and will be extensively covered in the art section of big mainstream South Asian newspapers. It feels like low-nutrition processed food. But I must confess that the structure does look quite spectacular though, but spectacles are so easy to achieve.

Top 10 Things To Know About The Effects of Stress

Top 10 Things To Know About The Effects of Stress

Wrong Attitude Increases Stress Level

We all experience stress, but the pessimists, perfectionists, and those with 'type A' personalities greatly increase the level of stress they experience in a given event, and even bring more stressful events into their lives with their self sabotage thought and behavior patterns. If you have some of these tendencies, you can significantly reduce the level of stress you experience with these resources on stress and self sabotage.

Some Types of Stress Can Be Beneficial

A certain type of stress is actually necessary and beneficial for a balanced and exciting life. Eustress is the type of stress you experience when you're riding a roller-coaster (if you enjoy fast rides), are playing a fun game, or are falling in love. Eustress makes us feel vital and alive.

You Can Stop Your Stress Reaction Right Now

When you experience stress, all manner of physiological changes occur to get you in top physical shape to fight or run. Unfortunately, if you don't calm yourself down relatively quickly, you could remain in this altered state for too long, and it could take a toll on your health. Practicing stress relievers like breathing exercises and meditation can calm you down quickly, returning your body to normal.

Even Small Amounts of Stress Can Affect Your Health

You may be aware that months spent in a stressful life situation can leave you vulnerable to illness, but did you know that relatively short periods of stress can also compromise your immune system, elevating your risk of illness? Sadly, it's true.

Wrong Attitude Can Make You Sick

Negative thought patterns and emotional stress can lead to psychosomatic illness, a condition that's caused at least in part by stress, but has physical symptoms that need to be treated as any other illness does.

You Can Prevent A Significant Amount Of Stress In Your Life From Occurring

Some stress is inevitable, but you can structure your life in ways that buffer you from stress and stressful events. For example, maintaining a healthy diet, getting regular exercise, and having at least a few close friendships are all important ways to relieve stress and stay healthy. Find more ways to relieve daily stress in your life, and prevent some of your stress from ever occurring.

Stress can age you prematurely in many ways

It may be surprising, but stress can be more of a factor in determining your physical age than the number of candles you blow out each year. Stress actually speeds up wear and tear on many, many areas of your body and at all levels, inducing many of the changes we refer to when we talk about 'aging'.

Not Everyone Experiences Stress In The Same Way

Certain inborn personality traits and learned thought patterns can cause two people who live through the same event to experience it very differently, with one person finding it extremely stressful and the other finding it only mildly stressful or not at all. Some of these traits you can't change, but others you can alter to a large degree. Read more about mental traits contributing to burnout and stress, and find resources for altering your experience of stress.

Some 'Stress Relievers' Actually Cause More Stress

Most of us have a few less-than-healthy ways of dealing with stress. Unfortunately, most of these 'bad habits' that feel so good at the time can really cause much more stress in the long run. If you smoke, drink in excess, spend too much, or handle stress in a way you know may not be good for you, find resources for understanding how you're affecting your stress levels right now.

Your Stress can be Gone by Imagining that It Can Be

Certain mental stress relief techniques, such as affirmations, guided imagery and visualizations, involve imagining that your stress is gone.

What and How on Stress

What and How on Stress

Stress as defined in dictionaries "the failure of a person to respond appropriately to a situation that develops in his/her life." Stress can be a real situation or could just exist in the person’s mind. Whether or not it is real, the brain reacts in the some way to produce a state of alarm in the body by producing more hormones that are necessary to prepare the body for "fight or flight".

Three stages of stress in the way the body reacts to:

The first stage is alarm, which results in the release of adrenaline, as well as the activation of the HPA axis that produces cortisol.

The second stage is resistance if the stressor exists for a period of time.

This is the body’s way of coping with stress. When it has to keep this up for a long time, the result is exhaustion, which is the third stage. At this point the body has depleted its resources for dealing with stress. This is when we are most aware of the symptoms of stress as it manifests itself in other ways, such as headache, stomach problems, mood changes, or depression, to list some examples.

Negative and positive experiences can cause stress. These are facets of the environment that can place the body in a state of stress as well, such as exposure to sounds and scents that cause unpleasant sensations, and situations such as lack of food and proper housing.

Everyone experiences stress at some time or another in their lives. It may be a one-time event or something that continues for a prolonged period. The effect that stress has on your life and the severity of the symptoms depend to a great extent on the ways in which you manage the stress or reduce it.

We commonly think of stress in our lives as being harmful and of having negative effects. However stress can be beneficial when you develop ways of managing stress properly. When you have a problem to solve, you can benefit from the stress because it encourages you to seek solutions and redirect your thinking. You need to have a healthy attitude towards stress in order to face new situations with an open mind.

For many people, past experiences have a direct bearing on how well they are at managing stress in their lives. Those who have been rejected many times will no doubt have low self-confidence and their way of managing stress will be to shy away from any situation that they perceive as being stressful for them.

This type of behavior, when it persists over a long period of time, can lead to more serious psychological problems and phobias. Chronic stress can lead to a breakdown in relationships, leading to divorce and addiction to drugs and alcohol, overeating/weight gain, or extreme weight loss.

When you recognize the symptoms of stress in your life, you should begin to look for ways in which you can cope with stress. If this is not possible, then you need to look for ways of managing it or for solutions to help you get relief. Taking up a new hobby that will get your mind off the situation, going for a walk, having a laugh with friends - all of these are great ways of managing your stress so that you stay healthy.

CRICKET SOUTH AFRICA TEST VICTORY AGAINST ENGLAND

CRICKET SOUTH AFRICA TEST VICTORY AGAINST ENGLAND

Cricket South Africa congratulates team for Test victory against England – Cricket News Update
Cricket South Africa has lauded the Proteas for their recent resounding Test success in England, which saw them emerging victorious from the first Test of the 3-match series, played at the Kennington Oval in London from July 19 to 23.
“There is still much work to be done to clinch the series,” said Jacques Faul, CSA’s Acting CEO. “But this is a moment to celebrate what has been a wonderful team performance of high quality and intensity.”
“There have been standout performances from Hashim Amla, Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis and Dale Steyn but there have also been many unsung heroes,” Faul added.
The Proteas went into the series hungry to claim the number one spot on the ICC’s Test team rankings, which is currently occupied by England, and the first triumph, a comprehensive victory by an innings and 12 runs, augurs well for the Proteas in the remainder of the series.
The first Test saw England winning the toss and electing to bat first, with Alastair Cook (115) and Jonathan Trott (71) appearing to have gotten the hosts up to a dominant position.
However, the Proteas turned the tables on the home team on the start of the second day, and eventually answered England’s first innings total of 385 with a powerful 637, courtesy brilliant performances by skipper Graeme Smith (who scored a 131 in the 100th Test of his career), Jacques Kallis (182), and Player of the Match Hashim Amla (who became the first South African to score a 300+ score in a Test match with his emphatic 311).
South Africa declared at 637, and the last day saw the bowlers stepping up to finish the match off, with Dale Steyn (5 for 56) and Imran Tahir (3 for 63) playing a pivotal role in cutting England off at 240.
“This is the first time England have lost a home Test match by an innings in three years and The Oval has been a ground where England have previously been almost invincible. It is our first victory at The Oval ever,” Faul pointed out, going on to praise Smith’s timely declaration, which allowed the Proteas bowlers to finish off the job.
Having gained a 1-0 lead, South Africa will be looking to clinch the series in the second match, due to be played at Headingley in Leeds from August 2 to 6.

Samsung Galaxy S III sold out 10 million units

Samsung Galaxy S III sold out 10 million units since launch

Samsung has sold more than 10 million units of its newest Galaxy S III model since its launch about two months ago.

The company said earlier this month it is expected to have operating profit record of 6.7 trillion ($5.9 billion) in the second quarter, boosted by strong sales of its flagship Galaxy smartphones.

Shin said last month he expected the global sales of the new phone -- available in more than 140 countries -- would surpass 10 million by the end of July, including sales of about a million units at home.

The third version of the firm's Galaxy S series offers face-recognition technology and improved voice-activated controls as well as a more powerful processor.

It also has a 4.8-inch (12.2-centimetre) screen that is 22 percent larger than the previous S2 version, while it can detect eye movements and override the automatic shutdown if the user is looking at the screen.

Samsung shipped 44.5 million smartphones in the first quarter, exceeding the 35.1 million of US arch-rival Apple, according to market researcher Strategy Analytics in April.

Samsung, embroiled in a slew of patent suits with Apple in international courts, is pinning its hopes on the S III to further erode its market share before the expected new version of Apple's iPhone 5 this year.

Earlier this month, Samsung won one of those patent battles, with a British judge ruling that Samsung's Galaxy tablet did not infringe Apple's registered design and that consumers were not likely to confuse it with the iPad tablet.

Google set to Pay $22.5M for Apple Privacy Violations

Google set to Pay $22.5M for Apple Privacy Violations

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is on the verge of fining Google for the record amount of US$22.5 million as a settlement for violating the privacy of users of Apple's Safari browser, since this much amount is largest amount in the history of the FTC for bypassing the privacy settings of users of Apple's Safari Web browser.

The fine comes after the Wall Street Journal contacted Google about a practice it discovered where special code was used to trick Safari into letting Google monitor users who had blocked tracking. Google said that the tracking of Apple users was inadvertent, but the actions of the firm were contrary to statements published in Google help documents that assured Apple users that Safari's privacy settings could be used to block undesired tracking. The Journal wrote about the practice in February, and Google has since disabled the code.

While the fine is just a drop in the bucket to Google, the FTC isn't the only government organization looking into whether or not the search engine giant has violated computer users privacy in the past or is currently doing so. The European Union -- led by France's Commission Nationale de l'Informatique et Libertés -- is looking into the Safari case as part of a larger privacy investigation, and a number of state attorneys general are also investigating the situation.

Though The Royal Monceau has been serving up luxury since 1928, don't expect a stuffy, old-fashioned atmosphere here. After a full-on, midcentury design assault by Philippe Starck, this hotel is now fresh, modern and still — thankfully — oh so Parisian. The personal details are what make this property enticing, especially in the suites, where you might even find a packet of love letters among the amenities. As for how you and your beloved can spend your time when you're not hidden away in your room, you might attend a special screening at Le Cinéma des Lumières, savor a seductive treatment at the Spa My Blends by Clarins or toast your love over a meal at La Cuisine, which masterfully blends the opulence of a grand cathedral with the intimacy of a family dining room.

Hullett House - China

We adore bustling, cutting edge Hong Kong for leading the hotel pack through the 21st century, but when it comes to romance, we're happy to trade sleek and trendy for intimate and unique. With just ten suites (the smallest measuring in at 800 square feet), Hullett House blends Chinese and British influences in a classic white colonial building dating back to 1881. Each room is individually decorated, from the Tsing Lung Suite, paying tribute to Imperial China, to the Pui O Suite, showcasing the jazz ethos of old Shanghai. There is one highlight, though, that all accommodations share: private terraced balconies with views of the gardens, harbor and/or Hong Kong skyline. The property has five — count 'em, five — drinking and dining venues, including Mariner's Rest, where guests can enjoy cocktails in the original jail cells of this building that once served as the city's Marine Police Headquarters. Prisoner of love, indeed!

The Ritz-Carlton Powerscourt - Ireland

The dramatic, Palladian-style The Ritz-Carlton, Powerscourt, County Wicklow is a dream come true for those wishing to discover the romantic spirit of the Emerald Isle. Although located near Dublin, it enjoys a bucolic setting in the middle of Powerscourt Gardens in the scenic Wicklow countryside. Floor-to-ceiling views from the opulently furnished guest rooms and suites range over the gardens and Sugarloaf Mountain, enticing guests outdoors, where fresh air can be enjoyed with a round of golf on one of two championship courses, followed by a pint of Guinness at McGills pub and dinner at Gordon Ramsay's first-ever restaurant in Ireland.

Il Salviatino - Italy

In the hillside village of Fiesole overlooking Florence, Il Salviatino drifts like a Medieval dream above one of Italy's most romantic cities. Serving as a palace in the 1400s, the privately owned villa has been lovingly restored by local artisans, blending ancient frescoes and mosaics with a rich contemporary décor that is opulent without being over the top. Among the swooningly aristocratic guest rooms, the best choices for lovebirds include the two-level Marcello Suite at the top of the tower and the Ojetti Suite with a private balcony that gazes over the Duomo. Couples can dine on dishes sourced from local grandmothers, indulge in treatments at Devarana Spa or simply seek out a quiet corner of the gardens for a tryst à deux. That's amore!

Rosewood Mayakoba - Mexico

What could be more memorable than arriving at the private dock of your chic sun-kissed suite by boat? This is just one of the many singular ways that Rosewood Mayakobá will make your stay special. Only 30 minutes south of Cancun, this 1,600-acre jungle resort weaves through lush lagoons on the edge of the Caribbean Sea. In the company of herons, cormorants and manatees, you and your beloved can hide away in a luxe retreat that has sheltered some of the most notable celebrities in the world. Whether you spend a day at the nearby Mayan ruins or in the resort's private island spa, each experience is sure to appeal to the romantic in you.

Wharekauhau - New Zealand

For many, a farm holiday might not sound like the height of romance, but those who have been to Wharekauhau know that agriculture and ardor do mix. At this 5,500-acre working sheep station overlooking spectacular Palliser Bay on the southern tip of New Zealand's North Island, you can renew both your spirit and your commitment to your significant other. Privacy is assured in ten three-suite cottages scattered throughout the estate. With four-poster beds, gas fireplaces and double spa baths, each accommodation encourages staying in. But if you're feeling in the mood for some PDA time, spend a day out tasting local wines or an evening lingering over a four-course gourmet meal in the resort's dining room.

Rayavadee - Thailand

Are you in the mood for dinner in an ancient limestone grotto overlooking the sea? Or perhaps a floral bath for two in a surrounded by lush jungle greenery? Welcome to Rayavadee, where seclusion and serenity top the list of amenities, and your every wish can come true. Fashioned after an idyllic southern Thai village, this exquisite resort features 26 acres of two-story pavilions and sumptuous villas surrounded by sandy beaches. When you're not snorkeling in the crystal waters of Krabi Marine National Park or learning the fine art of fiery Thai cooking, you can snuggle up with your beloved on a once-in-a-lifetime elephant ride or sneak in some private outdoor time on a nature hike to the local waterfall.

Qasr Al Sarab - United Arab Emirates

For romantics seduced by the vast desert expanses in Bernardo Bertolucci's sultry "The Sheltering Sky," there is Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara. This decadent oasis is located in what is called the Empty Quarter of the Liwa Desert, one of the largest uninterrupted sand deserts in the world. Every aspect has been selected to capture the Bedouin spirit of the region, from succulent meats roasted in fragrant spices to exfoliating sand baths in the spa. Guest rooms, suites and palatial villas feel right out of an Arabian Nights dream, with jewel-encrusted bronze chandeliers and gilded mosaic glassware. Couples desiring an unforgettable wedding should consider the private Royal Pavilion, which enjoys a secluded setting a kilometer from the main resort.
