SHAKER FLASHLIGHT

Shaker Flashlight

Most flashlights are battery powered. But this shaker flashlight is not like most flashlights; it does not need batteries. Instead, you – and a little elbow grease – provide the power. You shake it for a minute and voilĂ  it is ready to light the way.

The light passing through a lens for this flashlight comes from an LED (light emitting diode). The advantage of an LED is that it is very efficient and doesn't take much electricity for an LED to make a lot of light.

The power for the LED comes from a coil of wire and a strong magnet in a tube. When you shake the flashlight, the magnet slides back and forth inside the tube. Each time the magnet slides through the coil, the magnet generates a pulse of electricity in the coil.

Now, you could simply connect the coil directly to an LED and the flashlight would work. However, there would be two problems. First, you would have to shake the flashlight as you are using it, which would make the flashlight tough to use. Second, the LED would be turning on and off with each shake.

To solve this problem, the flashlight also contains a part called a capacitor. A capacitor acts like a battery, but it has one big advantage over a battery. A capacitor charges instantly. With just a few shakes, the capacitor holds enough charge to light the LED. Then an on/off switch lets you connect the capacitor to the LED to light it up. So you shake the flashlight for a minute to charge up the capacitor. Then you flip the switch to let the energy stored in the capacitor light the LED.

There's one other necessary part - the bridge rectifier. It takes the electricity coming from the coil and flips it so it's always going in the right direction. Consider this - when the magnet slides through the coil one way, it creates a pulse of positive electricity. When the magnet slides the other way, it makes a negative pulse. The rectifier converts the negative pulse to a positive pulse, so the capacitor can store all the positive pulses.

Pollution Sensitive EPA Dress

Pollution Sensitive EPA Dress by 2nd Skin

EPA Dress

It is one thing to be concerned about a ‘bad hair day’, but imagine wearing smart fashion that alerts you to the threat of a stinky ‘bad air day’. Stephanie Sandstrom’s EPA Dress, currently on view in the San Francisco Exploratorium’s 2nd Skin Exhibition responds to bad air – and that’s not all, it cleverly creates the wrinkles to prove it! Looking crumpled and tired may no longer be an indicator of a late night out, but rather an intelligent way of interpreting your surroundings as well as detecting lurking health hazards. And if that’s not enough to get you totally charged up, consider the Piezing motion-powered dress that redefines future-forward fashion with femme-bot sex appeal.

Designer Sandstrom has embedded her EPA dress with sensors that are able to intelligently read the surrounding atmosphere and in turn create telling kinks in the fabric’s surface. On days when the air quality is particularly poor, the EPA dress looks as if it has been pulled out of the laundry bin or from the back of one’s closet. It’s a scary prospect to think that our clothes might take on a texture of their own, but if this is a viable way for us to see our true selves or rather the state of our environment, well then, we are all for it!.

5 Green Earbuds For Your Green Cell Phones

Everyone definitely would like listen to their favorite music clearly and naturally, using personal and portable gadget. Were the gadgets would be portable MP3 player, cell phone or even smartphone with headphones or ear buds. But between headphone and ear bud, it looks like that ear buds are considerably greener than the headphones. It is because the ear buds require fewer materials, although their sound quality could not match headphones.

But the less materials usage doesn’t automatically change ear buds as a green gadget. These gadgets can be recycled or decomposed naturally when they reach their lifespan so that these are categorized as green gadgets. To achieve that, many manufacturers now produce ear buds from wood which is more environmentally friendly. Wood also provides natural sound, a quality that can not be offered by plastic or metal.

Although the ear buds are more environmentally friendly, they’re not optimal yet in delivering sounds that have been treated with surround technology like DTS, which has now also been found on the LG Optimus 3D smartphone or Sony’s wireless headphones which are also already equipped with Dolby Prologic II.

But who cares if environmental friendliness is a priority compared to the pragmatic satisfaction. So here are some great green ear buds you can count into consideration. Their price varies based on the comfortability and quality requirement.

Mint Battery – Shake to Charge

Mint Battery – Shake to Charge

The Mint Battery is a concept gadget that explores the use of kinetic energy to keep an AA battery charged. Rather than using energy from a wall socket or solar panel the Mint Battery looks in to the idea of being able to shake the battery to create charge.

To fit everything needed to make it work the Shakenergy Mint Battery is about half the capacity of a regular rechargeable battery (maybe 750mAh - 1000mAh). What the concept shows is the charging unit being placed at the bottom of the cylinder and the half sized battery sitting just above that.
As it's only a concept it is unknown if the Shakenergy will ever be made. Various factors such as charge time also need to be taken in to consideration. Still, a quite cool idea though regardless of it being practical or not.

ISRO launches RISAT-1

ISRO launches all-weather radar imaging satellite (RISAT-1)

Achieving yet another milestone in its space programme, India today successfully launched its first indigenous all-weather radar imaging satellite RISAT-1 that will boost its remote sensing capabilities and facilitate agriculture and disaster management.

The perfect launch of the satellite catapulted India into a select band of countries having indigenous radar imaging technology. “Only the USA, Canada, Japan and the European consortium have the technology so far,” Mr PS Veeraraghavan, director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram said.
Hailing the launch, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said it was an important milestone in India's space programme and congratulated scientists of Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) for displaying mastery of the complex launch vehicle technology.
In a textbook launch, the 1,858 kg spacecraft, the country's first microwave remote sensing satellite, was injected into precise orbit by Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle PSLV C-19 about 19 minutes after a perfect lift off at 5.47 a.m. at the end of the 71-hour countdown from Satish Dhawan Space Centre here, around 90 km from Chennai.
PSLV, the workhorse launch vehicle of Isro, achieved its twentieth consecutive successful flight when it launched RISAT-1, the heaviest satellite ever lifted by it, in a mission described as a “grand success” by space agency chief Mr K Radhakrishanan. RISAT-1, culmination of nearly 10 years of effort by Isro, has the capability to take images of Earth during day and night, as well as in cloudy conditions.
Till now, India depended on images from a Canadian satellite as existing domestic remote sensing spacecraft cannot take pictures of Earth during cloud cover. “The satellite can give valuable data like soil moisture, glacier positions and other details,” the Isro chairman said.
The satellite has been successfully deployed at an altitude of 480 km, Mr Radhakrishnan said, adding it would be raised to its desired altitude of 536 km of Polar Sunsynchronous Orbit in the next three days.
The four stages of heavy-duty PSLV-XL variant, used for the third time, performed without any glitch and scientists at the mission control centre broke into cheers when the rocket injected the satellite into orbit, marking the first launch this year a success for Isro.
Asked whether the satellite would serve any defence purposes, Mr Radhakrishnan said: “The primary utility of the satellite is for agricultural purposes during the kharif season.”

SWINE FLU (swine influenza)

SWINE FLU (swine influenza)

Swine flu (swine influenza) is a respiratory disease caused by viruses (influenza viruses) that infect the respiratory tract of pigs and result in nasal secretions, a barking cough, decreased appetite, and listless behavior.  In same manner Swine flu viruses may change so that they are easily transmissible among humans.
Swine flu is the common name given to a relatively new strain of influenza (flu) that caused a flu pandemic in 2009-2010.  It is also referred to as H1N1 influenza (because it is the H1N1 strain of virus).
Current status
On 10 August 2010, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that the H1N1 influenza pandemic was officially over.  However, it is important not to ignore H1N1 flu. The H1N1 flu virus will be one of the main viruses circulating this winter. Therefore, the H1N1 flu virus has been included in the 2010-11 seasonal flu vaccine.
Vaccination
The people who are in high-risk groups be vaccinated against H1N1 (swine flu). This includes all pregnant women, at any stage of pregnancy, and those not in high-risk groups are advised to take the seasonal flu jab, which protects against H1N1 flu.
What to do if you have H1N1 flu
People with H1N1 flu typically have a fever or high temperature (over 38C or 100.4F) and may also have aching muscles, sore throat or a dry cough. The symptoms are very similar to other types of seasonal flu. Most people recover within a week, even without special treatment.
High-risk groups
Some people are more at risk of complications if they catch flu. People are particularly vulnerable if they have:
·         chronic (long-term) lung disease
·         chronic heart disease
·         chronic kidney disease
·         chronic liver disease
·         chronic neurological disease (neurological disorders include motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease)
·         immunosuppression (whether caused by disease or treatment)
·         diabetes mellitus
Also at risk are:
·         patients who have had drug treatment for asthma in the past three years
·         pregnant women
·         people aged 65 and over
To stop the virus spreading
The most important way to stop flu spreading is to have good respiratory and hand hygiene. This means sneezing into a tissue and quickly putting it in a bin. Wash your hands and work surfaces regularly and thoroughly to kill the virus.

Career Roadmap

Preparing Career Roadmap

In day today life most of us start switching our jobs in various over domains for increase in pay. But we never bother about whats up next in career? And where career end up atlast? Do the job we in are safe? Whats the future scope of the job? Is there any career growth in the domain? We never thinked of it, but we simply switching over the jobs in variuos domains.

We never had a roadmap for our career. Before preparing a career roadmap try to analysis in what we domain we are stronger, and which is the most suitable for us. Self analaysis over a domain makes us confiedence over the job; even it may help us in better career growth. For eg. If we are good in programming, then choose programming field.

The very next step in career roadmap is to find out the tree structure of the domain. For e.g. if you started your career as programmer, then your next position would be team lead, and so.  Through the analysis of career tree structure we can make better career growth in short period.

Based on the level of the tree structure, we have to get prepared for the next level through proper training and updation of knowledge over the domian and field.

Finally,  the main requirement in roadmap is not preparing but to execute it. Once started executing the roadmap, we have to keen in updating ourself in the field.

How to maintain Old Gold Plated Watches as New Ones

How to maintain Old Gold Plated Watches as New Ones

Gold-plated watches don’t remain beautiful as new ones, but you can still lengthen the life of your watch by keeping it clean. Cleaning watches is more important, as sweat and oils from your wrist can dull the color or even wear down the gold-plating over time. However, you must be extra careful when cleaning gold-plating, or you will expose the underlying metal. Use only gentle cleaners and soft materials, and clean carefully and gently. And avoid scrubbing the gold-plating.

Simple Instructions for cleaning

1         Dampen one corner of a soft cloth. Rub over the gold-plating. If this step cleans your watch sufficiently and makes it sparkle, go no further. If the cleaning is not yet where you want it to be, then follow the rest of these steps, always remembering to rub very gently so that you do not remove the plating.
2        Smear a tiny drop of plain toothpaste on the cloth and gently start rubbing the inner side of the gold-plated band.
3        After finish rubbing the toothpaste all along the inside of the watch's wristband, Start on the outside of the band add a little extra toothpaste if necessary.
4        Wet a new clean cloth, and rub the toothpaste off the wristband to remove all the toothpaste.
5        Rub the swab gently over gold-plated areas around the face of the watch and dip a new cotton swab in water to clean the toothpaste off the rest of the gold-plating. Dry the watch well with a soft cloth.

Tips & Warnings

·         Regular, cheap white toothpaste works best for cleaning gold-plating. If the watch band has flexible links, use the cotton swab to clean in between these, too. If your gold-plated watch looks tarnished before you decide to clean, the finish may have already worn away. In such a case, these steps will not bring back that shiny gold appearance.
·         Don't use a gel toothpaste, and don't use an abrasive toothpaste. Choose a nonwhitening-formula toothpaste, because whitening toothpastes usually contain abrasives. Unlike solid gold, gold-plating can rub off or chip off. Don't rub too hard, and don't use abrasive cloths. Don't use too much water around the watch face, especially if the watch is not waterproof.

MOBILE TOWER RADIATION HAZARDS - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

MOBILE TOWER RADIATION HAZARDS - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1.       What are the Health Hazards faced with Mobile Towers Radiations?

Sleep Disturbance, Headaches, Memory Loss, Lack of Concentration, Fatigue, Joint Pains,   Vision Distortion, Miscarriage, Heart Problems, Brain Tumour, Leukaemia, Cancer, etc.
Also, it affects birds, animals, fruit yield of the trees, and environment.
Because of Mobile Tower Radiation Sparrows became endangerous species

2.      Do we have any Medical Reports to prove these?

Overuse of cell phones leads to hearing loss and ear tumour, and this has been reported by several doctors in India. On May 31, 2011, WHO reported, “The electromagnetic fields produced by mobile phones are classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as possibly carcinogenic to humans.”

There are several epidemiological studies done in various countries, such as, Germany, Austria, Brazil, Israel, etc. where they have reported increase in cancer cases in 5 to 10 years, where radiation level was more than 1  mW/m2. Cancer is the last stage and before that people living close to mobile phone towers have reported sleep disturbance, headaches, memory loss, lack of concentration, fatigue, joint pains, vision distortion, miscarriage, heart problems, etc. There are cluster of cancer cases in India also, which occurred after a few years of installation of mobile towers, and where radiation levels were around 10 mW/m2.

One of the links with peer reviewed publications on EMF effect on human and environment with epidemiological and experimental studies. http://www.cellphonetaskforce.org/

3.      What are the Indian Standards of EMF radiation levels permitted?

India follows ICNIRP Guidelines of safe radiation density of 4500 milliwatt/m2 for GSM900 and 9200 milliwatt/m2 for GSM1800. However, ICNIRP guidelines clearly state that these are for short term exposure, averaged over 6 minutes and not for long term exposure. Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) Report recommended adopting 1/10th of ICNIRP guidelines in Jan. 2011.

4.      What is the highest reading of EMF radiation level recorded so far?

Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has reported highest measured reading of power density as 450 mW/m2 and most of their readings are within 1 to 100 mW / m2. That’s why they always claim that they are     within the safe limits. However, from health point of view, safe limit for 24 hours exposure should be less than 0.1 mW / m2.

5.      How far from Mobile Towers / Base Station is safe so that there is no health hazard faced by humans?

Radiation level at a place depends upon power transmitted, radiation pattern of the antenna, and distance from the transmitting towers. From health point of view, for 24 hours exposure and assuming human life span of 70 years, safe radiation density is less than 0.1 mW/m2, which includes apartments, schools, hospitals, offices and playgrounds. Safe radiation density can be 10mW/m2, where people spend few minutes a day. Currently in     India, base stations transmit 20W/carrier, so in the main beam, a distance of less than 300m is not safe. If the power transmitted is reduced by 100 times, then safe distance will reduce by 10 times.

6.      Why should mobile phone towers not be close to Hospitals, Schools and Residences where pregnant ladies and Senior Residents reside? At what distance they should be?

Children and pregnant ladies are more sensitive to radiation, and hence they should not be exposed to high radiation for longer time. Senior residents and patients with weak immune system are more susceptible to high radiation.

7.      Are there any International standards for Mobile Towers?

Height at which the Towers should be installed – 30 m
Distance at which the Towers should be installed from Residences, Hospitals, Schools – 50 m
Power Transmission by the Towers – 1 to 2W in the dense urban area

8.      The Cell Phone Service providers are very financially strong and have strong political contacts. They conduct Seminars in 5 Star Hotels, invite foreign delegates, and distribute printed leaflets manipulated at times. The Civil Society does not have all this. How to put our point forward? We need technical studies literature to support.

There are plenty of technical literatures reporting health hazards to human, birds, animals, plants, and trees, etc. We need to raise funds, which can be utilized for creating awareness and fund epidemiological studies.

9.      Unless we are able to create public awareness, nothing is going to happen as telcos lobby is very strong. How do we go about it to create mass awareness through TV and media? How do we engage NGOs and Political parties especially opposition parties to raise relevant questions in the Parliament and also create public awareness.

We have to create public awareness through digital media, i.e., facebook, twitter, blog, email, SMS, etc. We can also request cricketers and bollywood people to join the campaign, as reporters like to cover them. Also, involve school and college children; let us not underestimate youth of our country.

10.   Can we get copies of rules and regulations for the radiation norms in the countries like Switzerland, Russia, Australia and Italy which countries seem to have adopted norms which are safe enough for all living beings?

We can get copies of rules and regulations of the radiation norms adopted in the other countries through internet.

Movies About Writers

Writing is a strange career. But it requires the creative mind with a stable mind leading to mental crack-ups, imaginary friends, and fatal desperation. In short: terrific fodder for a story!

Here are some of my favorite writer films. Each one gave a glimpse of what it’s really like to be a writer.
ADAPTATION

A screenwriter (Nicholas Cage) struggles to write a film adaptation of the book THE ORCHID THIEF, which turns out to be unadaptable — unless he takes outrageous liberties with the plot. The result is a zany look at how far writers will go to deliver the goods.

THE GHOST WRITER

While this film isn’t about a novelist, it paints a realistic picture of how celebrity “autobiographies” are actually produced. A talented young ghost-writer (whose name, significantly enough, is never given) has been hired to write the autobiography of a former Prime Minister. The ghost uncovers unsavory secrets that were never meant to be revealed — and which may threaten his life.
SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE

Young Shakespeare writes “Romeo and Juliet”, falls in love, and tries to stay one step ahead of the Queen’s guard. The scene that had me laughing hardest? When a ferryman finds out that Shakespeare’s a writer and asks him, “Will you read my manuscript?”
Finding Forrester

This film explores the sometimes tumultuous relationship that develops between a teen writing prodigy and a reclusive author played by Sean Connery.
If you're a writer, you HAVE to watch it. It's very inspiring and one of my favorite all-time quotes is by Forrester himself when he brings an underprivileged kid under his wing: You're first draft you must think with your heart. You're second draft, think with your head. Meaning, spill your words first, then edit and revise. Words from the wise. Excellent film!
